WHAT WE DO AT
SEEING IS BELIEVING

There are 253 million visually impaired people worldwide yet 80% of blindness can be treated or prevented. Seeing is Believing (SiB) is Standard Chartered’s global initiative to eradicate avoidable blindness by developing sustainable eye-care services in lower-middle income countries. The Bank has committed to raising US$100 million for SiB through fundraising and matching all public donations dollar for dollar.

WHY WE ARE
CLIMBING
MT. KILIMANJARO

Giving back and helping others is central to being a Standard Chartered International Graduate (IG). Over the last three years the Bank’s IG Alumni have spent thousands of hours volunteering and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charities across the globe.

In early 2017, as part of the Bank’s commitment to raise US$100 million for preventable blindness, the Bank’s IG Alumni made a promise to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Its host region of Sub-Saharan Africa has proportionately 73% more blind and visually impaired people than any other region, yet 80% of cases are either curable or preventable.

Two thirds of the countries in this region rate amongst the world’s least developed, where half of the population lives on less than a dollar a day. Today, it is also the region where “out of pocket” expenditure to meet health costs, is one of the highest in the world, far exceeding government expenditure.

So at 5,895 m (19,341 ft), the tallest mountain in Africa is a challenge worthy of a vital cause like curing preventable blindness, and we believe, worthy of all the donations and support this climb will inspire.

From everyone in our climb team – a sincere and heartfelt thank you.
